What is the Church?

48) What is the church?

God chooses and preserves for Himself a community elected for eternal life and united by faith, who love, follow, learn from, and worship God together. God sends out this community to proclaim the gospel and prefigure Christ’s kingdom by the quality of their life together and their love for one another.

“We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.” (II Thessalonians 2:13)

The Church is the family of God; it embraces people of all races, cultures and social classes – everyone who has put their faith in Jesus. God has chosen us and adopted us as His children. And this new relationship with God as our Father automatically brings us into a brother/sister relationship with all other Christians (Mark 3:31-35).

Having become God’s children, we begin to manifest the family likeness – not just in our personal, private lives but also in our relationships with one another. Thus the Holy Spirit moulds us into a community that will be the light of the world and the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13-16); our mission is to live out the Kingdom of God in front of the rest of the world.

Eternal God, giver of love and power,
your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world
to preach the gospel of his kingdom:
confirm us in this mission,
and help us to live the good news we proclaim;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
