The promise of holiness

We believe in the Holy Spirit.

Ezekiel 36:27

“I will put My Spirit in you and move you to follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws.”

Why is the Holy Spirit so vital for Christianity? It is the gift of the Spirit that makes the New Covenant radically different from the Old Covenant. The Old Covenant failed because it depended on the Israelites keeping the Law – and no law has ever been able to make people good. But when someone becomes a Christian, the Holy Spirit comes and starts to work in their hearts, changing them from the inside out…

This is something that we can’t do by ourselves, no matter how great our resolve or how determined our self-discipline. For nothing less than a complete transformation is required – a new creation, a new birth (II Corinthians 5:17). When God’s Spirit comes to live inside us, the result is neither superficial nor temporary; we really do become ‘new’ people!
